Were trebuchets really superior siege weapons? If so, why can't bows be upscaled to be more effective in the long range as well? I thought sieges were done by starving a city, how were siege weapons used?

Why are there so many autonomous republics in north Germany (Lubeck, Bremen, Hamburg) during the early modern period (1440's+), do democracies like the cold?

The Abenaki and Mik'maq peoples built their wigwams out of birch bark, a very flammable material that can be used to start fires. Is there any mention of wigwams burning down, and if so, was it a common occurrence?
